OBITUARY

MR. GEORGE W. MARKIE

An old resident'of Gisborne,!.Mr. George, William Markie, passed away at his residence in Crawford toad last night after an illness of, nearly a year. He was 72 years jpf age, and was- widely known, particularly/ In connection with., the Haiti’ freezing works," having been employed there from 1896 to 1944.

Mr. Lewis was educated in Gisborne, and later spent some years.-in various parts of New Zealand, talcing part in gold-mining operations on the West Coast during . one part of his 'life. He later returned to Gisborne and settled here permanently. He is survived by" Mrs. Lewis and by two grandchildren. Two of his children, a son and a daughter, died in the early 1900’s,' and his only surviving spn was killed in action in the last war. .
