OBITUARY
MR. GEORGE W. MARKIE
An old resident'of Gisborne,!.Mr. George, William Markie, passed away at his residence in Crawford toad last night after an illness of, nearly a year. He was 72 years jpf age, and was- widely known, particularly/ In connection with., the Haiti’ freezing works," having been employed there from 1896 to 1944.

He was well khown '. in' nis youth and early manhood, as/a ,daring i-ider and horsebreaker, started in business as a Carrying’contractor. When the Kaiti freezing works was started ih..189f h’e'Tqi|ied its staff, and "he 'wo'rked' cohtihuously there through the successive changes of administration in..the intervening ■4B years. During 35 years of his connection with the works he held the appointment of outside foreman. ‘ Mr. Markie was married' in .Gisborne in 1882 to Miss Mary" pierce, who survives, him with one daughter, Mrs, T. Ryan, and five sons"; Messrs. BAG. Markie, L. ,W.'. Markie, R, Markie and J. E. Markie,-all'of Gisborne, and Mr. P. B.' Markie, Wellington. One brother of the deceased survives in Mr. W. BV Markie,-'Gis-borne,hand two . sisters; Mrs. EV' J. East. Gisborne,' apd Mrs,K. Btfsh, tVellington. A funeral service will he held, at Cochrane’s chapel at 11 t aim. : oii Saturday, after which the funefal will leave for the Taruhqru cemetery.

The death, occurred this .morning ,'ih Gisborne' ofMr,' Charles" WilliafS Lewis, a resident of long standing and much respected. He had been ailing for. some time. ~ V V’./t.-. ~ Born in Napier in 1864,“he* .lo'&t nijs father . a year or, .’two" later "i§. the Hauhau troubles arid: was brought-ip, Gisborne'by his mother, whp'hergelf fell a victim three years later in ..the Poverty Bay ' massacre; ".Mr! .LfeWiS was saved by a Maori' woman Who took him with her when', she escaped across the Waipaoa' River in a bbat while the rebels were ransacking her home.
Mr. Lewis was educated in Gisborne, and later spent some years.-in various parts of New Zealand, talcing part in gold-mining operations on the West Coast during . one part of his 'life. He later returned to Gisborne and settled here permanently. He is survived by" Mrs. Lewis and by two grandchildren. Two of his children, a son and a daughter, died in the early 1900’s,' and his only surviving spn was killed in action in the last war. . The,, funeral, will iake'plaie .'on Saturday, following,'.a, seryie'e, at, 1.45 p.m. at Cochrane’s chapel. The burial will be at ,tlje Taruheru .cemetery.
