DARWIN’S FUTURE

ARMY AND AIR BASE

STATE PURCHASE PLAN TOWN AND DISTRICT CANBERRA. June 28. A bill to empower the Federal Government to acquire all privately owned land in and around Darwin will be introduced into Parliament, states the Minister for Works, Mr. P. Lazzarini. After ttie war the Federal Government intends to develop Darwin as a modern military and air base at a cost that is expected to exceed £7,000,000. The city will be laid out according to the latest methods of town planning. After the bill is passed the land will be available only on a 99-year lease as in the Federal capital, Canberra. Mr. Lazzarini said that to bring all the land in the township of Darwin under perpetual leasehold would cost about £500,000. The rebuilding of Darwin would be controlled by a master plan as in Canberra, but the full plan had not yet been evolved. It would call for the construction of the most modern airport in the Southern Hemisphere, with special tourist accommodation. It is thought that the civil population of Darwin after the war will exceed 15,000. The present civilian population is about 1500. The total post-war army and air force garrison may exceed 10,000.
