MOVED TO JAPAN

AUSTRALIAN CAPTIVES “APPALLING””" CONDITIONS BRUTAL DISCIPLINE (10 a.m.) CANBERRA, March 24. Evidence exists that Japan has been moving certain categories of Australian prisoners from the outer occupied territories to Japan proper, the Prime Minister, Mr. J. Curtin, announced yesterday. He tabled a report on Australians in Japanese prison camps, admittedly partially compiled from secret reports. The transfers, the report declared, were being carried out under conditions “appalling” to Western standards. There was complete disregard for the health and safety of the prisoners. In addition to prisoners being taken to Japan proper, some were being moved to Korea and Manchuria. Mr Curtin said the reports indicated that the mode of life of the prisoners was mainly an Oriental one, and would not be considered satisfactory according to Western standards. “In occupied territory, the discipline is the usual brutal Japanese type,” he said. “Savage punishments are imposed for quite trivial breaches of discipline.”
