UNDERGROUND CITIES

CAVES FOUND IN MAYEN LONDON, Mar. 22. The Americans found what amounted to an underground city under the wreckage of the town of Mayen, says the Associated • Press’ correspondent. Civil affairs were administered from a town hall carved in rock below the twelfth century castle. A subterranean passage 1200 ft. long, with wide galleries, housed the municipal staff, besides the police and fire departments and a large section of the population.

The Third Army found 3500 persons in refuge there. Another Mayen cave sheltered 2000. During air raids 12,000 lived underground.
