Invercargill Licensing

An indication that the suggestion of the Invercargill Licensing Trust that it should be allowed to open its licensed premises for two hours nighi}y as an experiment could nol be approved without legislation was given by the Minister of Justice, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, in a letter received at a meeting oJ the trust yesterday. Mr. Mason stated that he would give further consideration to the matter. Mr. Mason's letter stated that apparently the trust’s hours could not be modified as mentioned without legislation, which would have to await the session of Parliament. This woiild limit the scope for developing the experiment before the commission would be required to report. The chairman, Mr. Hugh Ritchie, said he would like to see evening hours given a trial and all sit-down drinking could be introduced. “Invercargill is the only place in New Zealand where G o’clock closing is observed,” Sfiid tlie Hon. T, F- Doyle.
