MANILA'S HEART

ENEMY DESTRUCTION

FINE BUILDINGS RAZED (By Telegraph —Press Assn. —Copyright.') NEW YORK, Feb. 7.

The fires in Manila Subsided last night but again flared up early to-day on the south side where trapped enemy troops are still attempting to destroy everything, reports the Columbia Broadcasting System's correspondent in Manila. Fire destroyed a square mile of the city north of the Pasig. River. Some of Manila's most handsome hotels are blackened skeletons, likewise the stately bank buildings and beautiful department stores. The Tokio radio to-day declared that American gutlfire and incendiarism perpetrated by Filipino guerrillas have destroyed the whole of the Manila business centre along Avenitn Rizal, north of the Pasig River. Homeless Filipinos wandered through Manila’s fire-blackened streets to-day crying “Burn Tokio!" to American troops, says the United Press correspondent in Manila. The fires are still burning near the waterfront and south of the Pasig River, Japanese artillery shells continued to crash into Santo Tomas camp and Billbid prison, scoring four direct hits on the main university building. A real, estate, expert estimated that the damage will reach 2.000.000.000 dollars.
