NEW COMMANDER

R.A.F. TRANSPORT SERVICE AIR MARSHAL COCHRANE LONDON, Feb. 6. The first chief of the New Zealand Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal the Hon. Sir Ralph Cochrane, K.8.E., C. 8., A.F.C., has been appointed air officer commanding the Transport Command in succession to Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick-Sowhill, G.8.E., K.C.8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., on his retirement.

Air Vice-Marshal Cochrane was commissioned with the Royal Navy in 1915. He was closely associated with the Fleet Air Arm and transferred to the Royal Air Force in 1919. He saw duty in the -Middle East. After a period of staff college duties in England, Air Vice-Marshal Cochrane arrived in New Zealand in 1936 at the invitation of fthe Government to advise upon the air defence of the Dominion. He later was appointed Chief of the Air Staff with the ran* of group captain. He returned to England in 1939. During the present war, Air ViceMarshal Cochrane commanded various bomber groups and was mentioned in despatches in 1943. When he takes his new appointment he will assume the rank of air marshal
