TOWN A SHAMBLES JAP. ACTIVITY CHECKED WAR IN NORTH BURMA (11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 7 Lashio, the starting point of the old Burma Road, was yesterday subjected to one of the heaviest air bombardments of the war in north Burma, says a correspondent at Eastern Air Command Headquarters. In an allday attack Japanese troop concentrations, A.A. positions and supply areas in new and old Lashio were blasted by wave after wave of aircraft. More than 150 sorties were flown against the. town. Only one aircraft was lost. Aerial reconnaissance had shown the increasing importance of the area in Japanese activity. Yesterday’s smashing attacks, according to the commanding officer of the. 490th squadron, will undoubtedly eliminate considerable Japanese strength from the Lashio area.

All the pilots reported that after the bombing Lashio was a shambles. The smoke could be seen 86 miles miles away by pilots arriving for attacks later in the afternoon.
