ADVANCE ON A 22-MILE FRONT

SEVEN CROSSINGS IN ASSAULT BOATS (11 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. Four divisions of the American Third Army, in a surprise attack launched early to-day, stormed over the Sauer and Our Rivers in the Eastern Ardennes, says Reuter’s correspondent. Seven crossings were made in assault boats on a 22-mile front from Echternach to a point north-east of Clerf. The Americans met heavy small arms fire from the Siegfried fortifications. The forces participating comprise two infantry divisions and one airborne and one armoured division. Reuter’s correspondent with the Sixth Army Group reports that the Americans have occupied Neifbrisach and also secured a bridge at the western approaches, thus cutting off this escape route to the Reich for the Germans still in the Colmar bridgehead.
