STAYING IN CHINA

14TH U.S. AIR FORCE (9 a.m.) CHUNGKING, Jan. 5. General Chennault stated that the 14th United States Air Force, without less, destroyed 241 Japanese planes in December, “the best month in our history despite the loss of 14 air bases last autumn.” He added that the force had also sunk 73,950 tons of shipping and probably sunk 113,900 tons, during December. Discounting newspaper reports that the 14th U.S. Air Force may quit China, General Chennault predicted: “It will still be operating in China when the last Japanese has passed through the gates of a prison-camp. We are hitting the enemy harder, and exacting a heavier toll, every day,” he said.
