LOSS TO PEERAGE
LANDSDOWNE TITLE TWO HEIRS KILLED SERVICE WITH FORCES (If) a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4. The death in action of Lord Lansdowne, the eighth Marquess, is announced. He had succeeded his brother in August last, on the death in action of the seventh Marquess. Lord Edward Norman Fitzmaurice, eighth Marquess of Lansdowne. 29th Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw, Baron Nairne, Earl of Kerry. Viscount Clanniaurice. Viscount Fitz-Maurice and Baron Dumkeron, Earl of Shclbourne. Baron Wycombe, held one of the eldest peerages in the United Kingdom. Tie was the third son of the sixth Marquess of Lansdowne. who died in 193(1 after a long career in political and social life, and who was succeeded by Lord Charle Hope Fitzmaurice. then 19 years of age. Lord Charles Fitzmaurice. who held a commission in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanrv. was killed in action last year, the title passing to his brother. Lord Edward Fitzmaurice. who was 21 years of age when he succeeded. Both were educated at Eton and Oxford. . , The title now passes to a cousin ot th e late Lord Lansdowne. the Hon. C. J Mercer-Nairne, the son of Lady Violet Aston.
