GAINS AT HEAVY COST LONDON, Jan. 3. A Soviet communique says that Russian troops in Czechoslovakia, advancing on Lucenec from the east and soutn, occupied a number of inhabited localities. The Russians in this area on Monday and Tuesday captured 2320 Germans and Hungarians. Red Army troops in Budapest continued the fight for the annihilation ot the encircled enemy, and occupied 130 blocks ot houses in the eastern part of Budapest and 31 blocks in the western part. Russian troops south-east of Komarom were engaged in repulsing attacks by large iorces of enemy tanks and infantry, trying to brean through for the relief of the encircled group in Budapest. At the cost ot Heavy losses in men and material, the enemy succeeded in occupying several inhabited localities on the southern bank of the Danube. One of the greatest air-battles fought over the Eastern Front was waged to-day over Budapest, says the Associated Press’ Moscow correspondent. Soviet fighters, bombers and Stormoviks. flew' hundreds of sorties against the Luftwaffe, which resisted strongly. Losses were heavy on both sides.
