Whale Captured
Several Napier picnickers at the beach at Arapawanui on Tuesday were surprised to see a small whale blowing a short way off-shore and decided to attempt a capture. Having nothing in the way of a harpoon, the campers resorted to the use of a .303 rifle and several hits on the whale were secured from tire beach. A dinghy was launched and further hits were secured on the whale’s head from close range. A woman member of the party then swam to the dead whale and fastened a rope to it, and by that means it was towed to the shore. The whale was discovered to be Oft. long by about sft. at its widest part. The'variety of the whale is not known, but inquiries are being made.
