ONE MONTH’S GAOL
BOOKMAKER SENTENCED “ILL-HEALTH NO EXCUSE” (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 3. Pleading guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, Norman Landale Tremain, aged 52, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Mr. ,J. Morling. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The police stated that Tremain had for some time been accepting bets in the bar of a city hotel. He had been repeatedly warned about bookmaking as late as Saturday last. However, lie did not cease and yesterday he was arrested when lie iiad voi in his possession, but no betting material. Counsel for defendant said Tremain was in ill-health and incapable of doing manual work. It. was only economic necessity that urged him to carry on. but lie had now given it up. The (magistrate said that if iltheaith was to be an excuse for committing an offence, then it would bo impossible to enforce the law.
