VERY FINE METEOR

ip.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. An extraordinarily fine meteor blazed across the sky shortly before D o'clock on Saturday night, shedding sparks and leaving a luminous trail which lasted a considerable time. Its course appeared to terminate over the Wairai-apa. and three or four minutes later an explosion was heard, the concussion being sufficient lo shake houses as if they had., boon humped. The time interval suggested that the explosion occurred over the southern portion of the Wairarapa.

The meteor was observed by Mr. Brian Con nop from his home in Russell street, Whataupoko, at 8.50 p.m. on Saturday. It came from the horizon in the south-south-west and made, a high arc across the sky lo disappear high in the south. From start to finish the movement left a trail of bright yellow sparks which quickly disappeared, except for a large cluster which remained on tlie horizon for about 12 minutes.
