DANCE The floor was efficiently supervised by Mr. A. Wright at the enjoyable fortnightly dar.e, conducted by the Tamarau Women's Inst,i tute in the Selvytt Hall on Thursday night for the benefit of its building fund. Miss Una Reed’s orchestra provided the music for the programme, which featured t. Monte Carlo waltz competition, and extras were contributed by Mr. B. Barnes. Suppei was served under the direction of Mesdamo: T. Campbell and H. Jones, assisted by institute members. SURPRISE PARTY FOR BRIDE-ELECT A delightful surprise party was arrange by the members of the Cook County Am-M'i can basketball team in honour of one .oftheir fellow-players, Miss Joan Douglas whose marriage to Pilot Officer V. Duck manton takes place next week. Amusing games, competitions and community singing comprised the evening's entertainment, and Misses L. and E. Bign'-R were heard in several vocal solos. After supper had been served, the bride--10-be opened the gift parcels which contained an array of handkerchiefs. Miss Douglas thanked all present for the enjoy, able evening. Newton, J. McCnllum, and P. Hitchener. CHRISTMAS PARTY On Thursday a Christinas party w.-s enjoyed by the members of tho Gisborne Croquet Club at the club’s greens. The duties of organiser were undertaken by Mrs. J. K. Nasmith, who was asked to’nccept a gift in recognition of her •splendid services. The opportunity was taken lo present shoulder sprays, the pleasing work of Mrs -.V. E. Kennedy, and gifts to tho president, Mrs. H. Gilmer, and the secretary, Mrs. L. F. Sartc-n hearing the good wishes of the members. Felicitations also were extended to Mrs. J. A. Booth on the occasion of hei birthday. Competitions were entered into with enthusiasm, Mesdames A. A. Brown, W. H. Kennedy, L. L. Sarten, H. Gilmer, Henderson and Nasmith emerging the winners. Afternoon tea was served in the clubhouse, the decorative scheme, which had its inspiration in Mrs. Nasmith, assisted by Mrs, T. Adams, being artistically carried] out with hydrangeas and golden daisies. EXITED NOTIONS REVUE The cares of the present days of stres were set aside by a large audience at t.hc Opera House on Thursday night, when Miss -taureen Keany presented a most delightlul Christmas extravaganza, "The United Notions Revue,” a merry blending of mirth, melody and dancing. The revue, which was presented in twt acts, was a great success, and throughoir the 26 "notions" there was not one weal link. Mr. Will 11. Keany was the producer, anti the principals, Mrs, B. Akers, Misses Veto nica Sexton, Cynthia Kane, and Messrs Brian Sherrill, C. V. Harro, Paul Hocklej and Will B. Keany, had the support of : talented cast of juvenile performers. The beautifully-dressed ballets, originated and trained by Miss Maureen Keany, re fleeted her artistry, which was warmly acknowledged by the very appreciative audience. Attractive stage settings appropriate to each number blended well with the general colour and lighting scheme. The ensemble "notions” included ‘‘Let's Sing a Bright Song,” "You’re Irish You're Beautiful,” "Second Minuet,” ‘‘Skipping Dance,” “Strawberry Lane," "Aloma,” "In ternational Reel,” "Treasures of the Deep,” “Seasons,” "This is Worth Fighting For,’ “Ballot Operatique,” “Daybreak,” "A Ball room Notion,” "Massed Tap Ballet,” and “With a Smile On Our Lips.” The programme also Ventured vocal solos by Mrs. B. Akers and Mr. Brian Sheriff, violin solos by Roy Watt and lan (Jordon. :■ violin duet by Sigrid Ferris and Jim Little and a vocal trio by Mrs. A. C. Coleman, Miss Smith, and Miss L. Coleman. Messrs, Keany, P. Hockley, C. V. Harrc and Rees Allan provided a light comedy touch. The duties of accompanists were carried out by Mrs. T. H. Berry and Miss Teresa Vita, and Messrs. Frank Williams and A. J. Nicol filled the positions of house and stage managers respectively, Mr. J, Livingstone acted as mechanist, and Messrs. Little and Searle were responsible for the lighting effects. The wardrobe was in the efficient hands of Miss Francis Kenny. , The performers comprised Pat Main.
