SOLDIER'S PROPERTY GREEK GUIDE’S LAPSE “TO MILTON „ 25.2.40“ (N.Z.E.F. Onicial War Correspondent.) GREECE, Nov. 27. During the evacuation of Greece in 1941. a New Zealand soldier cut oil from his unit sought shelter in Euboea. He found it under the roof of Mr. D. P. Nicolinakos, manager of an AngloGreek magnesite company at Limm. A few days later arrangements were completed for his escape, and lie lcit with a guide for a bay where a caique was waiting. The guide returned and gleetully boasted "that his mission had been successful. In fact, he had stolen all the New Zealander’s gear. Infuriated at the man’s treachery, the manager had him searched. In his possession was a wrist-watch. Mr. Nicolinakos was at a loss as to what to do, he had no means of identifying the New Zealander. . . Inquiries seemed to indicate that Me soldier had made good his escape. For 3.’, vears Mr. Nicolinakos kept the watch", hoping to find some means of restoring it to its rightful ownei. At last came liberation, and he took the watch to the military office m Athens. It is a Pierce wrist-watch, bearing the inscription: "To Milton from Mother and Father—Mizpah!" and the date 2,9/2/40. This offers the only possibility of tracing the owner.
