U.S. ARMY NEWSPAPER (10 a.m.) ' NEW YORK, Dec. 6. Colonel Ensley Llewellyn, director of the U.S. Army newspaper “Stars and Stripes” in the European theatre, told Congress that the publication made a clear profit of 3,000,000 dollars since it began in April, 1942. He added that the newspaper ranked with food as a front-line necessity. Colonel Llewellyn said that whole companies sometimes break their ranks to obtain a copy. The Stars and Stripes commenced with a circulation ’of 2000, and now had more than 1.000,000. The profits were made solely from the penny charge per issue.
