BOAT ASSAULTS

SAAR CROSSINGS AMERICANGALLANTRY NAZIS EXTEND BLOCKS (10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. G. American infantry, in assault boats, ■during the night made four new crossings of the Saar River on a 2\ miles’ front between Marzig and Saarlouis, says Reuter’s correspondent with the U.S. Third Army. The crossings were made in the face of considerable small-arms fire. Further south, the have entered the outskirts of Saarguemines. American beventn Army forces hold nearly a score of towns immediately west, nortn, and south of tne important German supply centre of Hagenau. The level of tne swollen rivers in the northern armies’ area is generally falling, says Reuter’s corresponuent in Lolland. The flooding of the Canadian sector, wnere 2o to 30 square miles of land north-west of Nijmegen is now inundated, is not spreading dangerously, and barring more heavyrain, the- danger appears to have passed. The Germans have stayed quiet in the northern sector since their setback of two days ago. There is evidence that the Germans are extending tneir defence works east of the Roer River. The high level of- the river, which is still rising, has prevented patrols of the Ninth Army crossing.
