EVENING CLASSES

PROGRESS IN 1944 “The average number of students attending evening classes at the Gisborne High School this year is 300, states the rector, Mr. J. Leggat, in his annual report. Roll numbers have been fairly constant. “In our technical classes we greatly appreciate the help of those apprenticeship committees which have taken such a lively interest in their own juniors,” Mr. Leggat says. _ “We cannot make much progress without this co-operation and I would appeal to employers and trade organisations to become familiar with the work that is being carried on.” Next year it is hoped to do more for the youths in clerical occupations and, if sufficient numbers are available. commence classes in accountancy. In the techonological examintions in plumbing three candidates from the evening classes were successful in passing at the intermediate stage. Thirty-three students from the short-hand-typing classes passed public examinations, but all results were not yet to hand. Eight candidates gained passes in the Public Service certificate examination.
