STRAWBERRIES BY AIR
SUPPLIES FOR TROOPS (P.A..)' AUCKLAND, Dec. (>. Ripe luscious strawberries picked that morning have been among the delicacies enjoyed by sick and wounded Allied servicemen in hospital in New Caledonia since the air transport of fruit and vegetables started from Auckland to the I acme a fortnight ago. Obviously, only a limiif'd ouantity of such perishable goods can be token-by air and the utmost care is taken to see that they aic consumed where they do most good—among the sick and wounded convalescent men from the forward areas. , , Mill:, moat and other food have been transported by air to the Islands over the last year or so. but only recently have fresh vegetables and local fruits been included. The experiment has been highly successful.
‘To men who have lived for months- on service rations and have been physically broken by war the sight of fresh fruit and vegetables is a great morale builder and the service is very greatly appreciated by our boys,” said an American officer to-day.
