DRIVE TO AUSTRIA
SOVIET PROGRESS SERIOUS BLOW DEALT NOW ON I.AKF. BALATON (11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. The Russians to-day are adding scores of new places to the towns, numbering over 100, which were taken yesterday in the drive towards Austria, says the Associated Press’ correspondent in Moscow. The Germans seem unable to dig in and establish new defence lines. The Russians, while keeping up the northward aovance in southern Hungary to within 35 miles of Budapest, have turned westward and north-westward and dealt a serious blow to the Germans on the left Hank. There are indications that the Russians may be thrusting strong units westward between Lake Balaton and the Yugoslav border.
'Die German News Agency admits that the Germans have evacuated Sioi'ok, on the eastern shore of Lake Balaton.
A Moscow communique says the places captured include Ozora and Eleszallas, on the Danube’s west bank 37 miles south of Budapest. It adds that fighting is occurring on the outskirts of Sziegetvar.
