Convened by the Mayoress, Mrs. N. H. Bull, particularly for young people, a mootin;; was addressed last night in the Victoria League, rooms by Mrs. Greenbie, the American authoress, who is visiting Gisborne with her husband, Mr. Sydney Greenbie, special assistant to the American Minister in New Zealand. There was an attendance of about HO, representing a number of local organisations.

After a short address based on the question: “Can career girls be glamour girls?” Mrs. Greenbie invited questions from members of the audience. Her answers dealt with many aspects of life in the United States, particularly as it affected women. She pointed out that housekeeping in her country was far simpler than in New Zealand and one result of this was the large number of mothers who were able to work. In some parts day nurseries were numerous and the tendency for women to become separate wage earners was not due entirely to the pressing needs of war. Wages were high, the speaker said, but at the name time it had to be remembered that goods and services accepted in America as necessities were regarded in New Zealand as luxuries. VICTORIA LEAGUE

The Poverty Bay Victoria League completed its activities for 1944 at a very largely attended meeting held yesterday afternoon.

The highlight of the meeting was a most interesting talk on "The Art of Living,” given by Mrs. Sydney Greenbie, an American visitor, who in New Zealand holds the official post of consultant to Mr. Greenbie, special assistant to the American Minister in New Zealand, and head representative of the U.S. Oliice of War Information for the Dominion. On the motion of the president, Mrs. L. Balfour, a warm vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. Another visitor, Mrs. McGill, vice-presi-dent of the Wellington Victoria League, in briefly addressing the meeting on the work of the league, congratulated the local branch on its very attractive club rooms. A short programme of music included a vocal solo, "God Bless America,” contributed by Mrs. Balfour as it compliment to Mrs. Greenbie. Several Christmas carols were presented by the musical circle of the league, and Mrs. H. J. Poole, Mrs. W. Carruthers and Miss Lois Evans were heard in two vocal trios. Mrs. I. Stephenson acted r.s accompanist.

Two letters received from England acknowledging the receipt of cases of clothing forwarded by the league were read by Mrs. Balfour. The sales table was under tho charge of Mrs. P. llockley. and Mrs. A. V. Clare was responsible for the serving of afternoon fra. Gifts of toys were brought by the members for dispatch fo the patients in the children's ward at the Cook Hospital and to the inmates of the Heni Materoa Children's Home.
