SCHOOL ATHLETICS

INTERMEDIATE SPORTS To t.ho enjoyment of a considerable number of parents, old students and friends of tin- Intermediate School and annual athletic sports were held on the school ('rounds on Saturday under very pleasant conditions and surroundings. It. was the first occasion that, the school grounds had been used for the annual event, but. with the specially prepared track and the natural terraced grounds at the back of the school the held presented an ideal position for the lengthy list, of events. It was also the first occasion the school had presented the sports on a Saturday, tnis for the purpose of allowing parents and visitors to attend in numbers. Although there were no records broken this year and some of the individual times were slower than in former years, the events were keenly contested and some close finishes were witnessed. Championships were won as follows: Senior.—Boys: Alec Maokie. (iirls: Kathleen Wilson. Junior. —Boys: Bert Williams. (lirls: Jocelyn Dobbie. Each contestant gaining placlngs in the various events contributed points to the house he or she represented and as before this added more interest to the running ot the events. The house championship this year was won by Hiuetu, witli 428 points, I'c Rat it being second with HIM points, followed by Tawhiri and Kahutia with 391 and 285 points respectively. Tile chairman of the Intermediate School Committee, Mr. F. Wise, in a short address, thanked the parents and friends for their attendance, also all those contributing to the successes of the sports and in particular to the Home Guard Band, which at frequent intervals during the afternoon played musical selections. A special feature of the team events on Saturday was the parade of house representatives with their banners and house colours, which made a very attractive display.

The pupils and staff provided the afternoon tea and ice cream was available. Members of the school committee assisted the stun in judging and also acted as time-keepers.
