N.Z. RELIEF GIFTS

BRITISH COAST TOWNS HOLIDAYS FOR CHILDREN (11 a.m.) LONDON. Oct. 30. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, who visited Canterbury regarding the use of funds donated by New Zealand for the relief of people suffering from air raids, also went to Folkestone and Dover where he received the thanks of the mayors and saw children who were given a fortnight’s holiday. The mayors warmly thanked the people of New Zealand for their generosity and their remarks were loudly cheered by the enthusiastic children. Three hundred Folkestone children went on holiday, some in Brighton and others in Whitstable. They were billeted in ne’s and two's in private homes. One hundred Dover children had a similar holiday. These two towns, together with Ramsgate, received £IO6O each and Deal £SOO from the New Zealand funds. Several children, particularly in Dover, had lost one or both parents due to the bombing or shelling, and in Dover they mostly slept in caves. The worst part of the shelling was that people were never certain day or night, when a shell might land.

Mr. Jordan expressed New Zealand’s admiration for the people generally during their long period of trial.
