DAME ETHEL SMYTH

MRS. JOHN MUNRO At the Cook Hospital yesterday the death occurred of Mrs Alice Jane Munro at the age of 57 years. • Born at Malciki, Canterbury, Mrs, Munro married Mr. John Munro at Wairnate when she war. 31 years of age. For the part 25 years they have been resident at Ormond. One of Mrs. Mnnro’s suits. Acting Squadron Leader John Leslie Munro, has gained distinction in the air force, winning both the D.S.O and D.F.C.'. Resides her husband and Squadron Leader Munro, Mrs. Munro leaves a second son, lan, who is a prisoner-of-war in Germany, and one daughter, Miss Doris Munro. serving with the W.A.A.C. . , . . . . Following a service to be held in Cochrane's Chapel. William street, at 1.45 p.m. to-morrow, the funeral will leave for the Taruheru cemetery.

(11 a.in.' LONDON. May f). The death occurred to-day of Dame Ethel Smyth. D.8.E., Mus. Doc., the well-known composer and conductor. The daughter of the late General Smyth, she was 85 years of age. Her operas, “Der Wald. “The Wreckers” and “The Boatswain's Mate,” made her fame. Her volumes of reminiscences also won success. She was appointed a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire in January. 1022.
