CAUGHT BY SPITFIRES
NINE NAZISTHOT DOWN FOUR MINUTES' TOLL LONDON, May 8. The Naples correspondent of the Exchange and Telegraph Agency states that Flying Officer R. B. Hendry of Masterton, was one who scored a double victory when eight Spitfires from a squadron of the First Tactical Air Force shot down nine Messerschmitt 109’s during an air battle north of Rome on Monday. The Spitfires were returning from an uneventful sweep when they spotted 18 Messerschmitts, all carrying longrange tanks, flying northwards 1000 ft. above Lake Bacciano. The Spitfiies dived on them from 11,000 ft. In four minutes there were nine blazing wrecks in the woods fringing the northern edge of the lake. The squadron-leader who led the Spitfires said “We could clearly see them blowing up as they hit the ground. We surprised the Germans, who had no chance.”
