TEACHER’S POSITION DEPARTMENT AND BOARD “Surely if a man can be released for service it is our duty to see that he is released,” said the chairman, Mr. G. A. Maddison, at Friday’s meeting in Napier of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board when a discussion ai'djge Over the Education Department’s refusal to approve the appointment of On art mistress at the Napier Intermediate School to release a Grade 1 man for active service. , The information from the ment pointed out that it was unable lo approye of the appointment of Miss B. V. Rigden to the position of art mistress. She: was employed as a probationary assistant under the Auckland Education Board as fpom February 1, 1943, The department gave permission for her appointment as relieving art instructress at the Auckland Training College pn the copy ditioii she returned to her positioh as probationary assistant. The departinept considered that Miss Rigden s best interest as a teacher would be served by completion of hev probationary year, and thus completing the, requirements for the award of a trained teacher’s certificate. Mr. W. L. Dunn, secretary of the board reported that he had discussed the matter with the department by telephone and tie informed them that the purpose of Ihe appointment vyas to release a Grade 1 man for active service, but the department ,wm adamant. The department also stated that if Miss Rigden did leave, her appointment under the Auckland Board to take the position in flay, her service at the Napier Intermediate School would not be recognised for her teacher's certificate. .. On Mr. Maddison’s motion, seconded by Mr. T. Rowe, if Was. decided to again approach the department on the matter. .. . - , •
