YOUNG MAN’S ESCAPADES A labourer, Edward Ambrose Quittcriden, aged 18, pleaded guilty at the Palmerston North .Magistrate’s Court, bel'uro Mr. LI. P. Howry, S.M., on a varied array of charges, including tlie conversion "of four motor cars and a bicycle and the theft of money, benzine, chocolates and social security stumps. Senior-Dot active Meiklejohn slated that t^uiltenden for a number of years was under the care of the Child Welfare Department, and was employed as a fariii labourer. He then started on a career of crime in which two other youths were implicated. The cars were taken while he was on visits to the ci'tv and were used to travel to Feil(ling. ]'u accused’s possession were a knucklebOster and a bunch of keys which had been tiled. Altogether he had converted vehicles valued at £382 to his own use, travelled approximately 115 miles, using six and aqi'ihrter gallons of petrol, besides stealing two gallons of petrol and £3(5 12s (id worth of property. He also caused damage to the vehicles he converted to the extent of £3O. Accused was sentenced to be detained in a Borstal institution for two years on the car conversion charges mid convicted and discharged on the others.
