DAY RAID ON HOLLAND (British Official Wireless.) (11.40 a.m.) RUGBY. July 18. Fifty enemy fighters, according to early claims, were destroyed when unescorted Flying Fortresses of the United States Eighth Air Force, of which only two are missing, raided industrial targets in Amsterdam and north-west Germany to-day. An official communique, in giving this news, says that bombs were seen to burst in the target areas. Heavy opposition was encountered on the way home. , A heavily-laden medium-sized enemy supply vessel, sailing along the Norwegian coast, was bombed and set on fire by Beaufighters of the Coastal Command this morning, states the Air Ministry news service. Twelve hits were scored on the stern and amidships. A smaller vessel, about four miles away, apparently an escort, was attacked with cannon fire by one Beaufighter. , , Fold- Junkers 88’s, which attacked a Coastal Command Halifax on antisubmarine patrol over the Bay of Rishay hist night, were beaten off by Ihe aircraft’s guns, states the Air Ministry news service. The pilot of the Halifax said that all four attacked at once, but the Halifax was hit only in a few places and none of the crew was wounded.
