THROWN OVERBOARD

FERRYBOAT'S ANCHOR

The heavy bow anchor of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company’s steamer Makora was .thrown overboard by some persons on a trip from Auckland to Devonport shortly after 12.30 a.m. on Sunday. The incident occurred when the steamer was out from Queen’s Wharf and the master was forced to return to the ferry wharf and signal for the police. “The stock of the anchor was broken when it was Hung overboard and fortunately the windlass held the anchor as soon as the slack of the chain* was taken up,” said Captain J. Forbes, manager of the company. “A sergeant and three constables questioned the passengers, but nobody could give any information. Apart from the damage to the anchor the mischievous act would involve considerable cost as the gear would have to be overhauled, said Captain Forbes. This was the second time that an anchor had been thrown overboard.
