NEWS OF THE DAY
Gisborne Conference The twenty-fifth Dominion conference of the New Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Federation will be held in Gisborne on November 8,9, 10 and 11. This was announced by tlie president of the federation, Mr. J. R. Virtue, who with the secretary, Mr. 11. 6. Martin, Were in Gisborne during the week making arrangements for the holding of the conference. It is expected that 70 delegates from all parts of the Dominion will attend,- in addition to visitors accompanying the delegates.
“Has To Be Stopped” “If bookmakers were confined to Ihemselves, without agents, there would not be so much betting done. The agent is an aider and abetter of a big system which has to be stopped, and in my opinion, the agent is really a bigger menace than the bookmaker operating on his own.” So said Mr. J. Miller, S.M., at the Hastings Magistrate's Court when inflicting a fine of £4O with costs 10s, on David Stephen Brough, shopkeeper, who pleaded ~-uilty to a charge of using his shop a £ a common gaming house.
