TWO GISBORNE PILOTS
(P.A.I WELLINGTON. .Tilly 9. The award of eight Distinguished Flying Crosses and two Distinguished Flying Medals to members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force are announced by the Air Department today. They are:—Distinguished Flying Cross Flight Lieutenant John Leslie Munro. Mother: Mrs. A. J. Munro, Gisborne. Acting Flight Lieutenant Guy Lionel Roy Hey wood. Auckland Flying Officer Sydney Armstrong Haig Short, Paeroa. Flying Officer George Alfred Patrick, Dunedin. Flying Officer Charles Fray Ormerod. Father: Mr. O. B. Ormercc.. Gisborne. Flying Officer John Aiteheson Maguire, Milton. Pilot Officer John Mathers Bailey. Northern Ireland. Flying Officer Lloyd Allen Trigg. Palmerston North. Distinguished Flying- Medal Flight Sergeant Robert Leonard Summerville, Auckland. Sergeant William Thomas Gunn. Invercargill. The citations state: "Attacks against heavily defended German and Italian targets arc among Flight-Lieutenant Munro’s list of many operational (Sights. His attacks
have invariably been pressed home with great courage and determination, his leadership setting a line example to the aircraft captains in his squadron.” "An excellent navigator, Flying Officer Ormerod has completed a large number ol operational sorties. Always cheerful and willing to undertake any task set him, he 'has
set a splendid example to all ranks. His operational record includes attacks ~ against heavily defended German towns.”
Flight-Lieutenant Munro was born in Gisborne and received his education there. Flying-Officer Ormerod was also born in Gisborne, and educated at Wanganui and Wellington.
