STRANGE MARKET
HEAD-HUNTERS ARRIVE SOUTH PACIFIC BASE. June 28. Natiye residents draw back in alarm at the American purchasing market at Seota Mission on Florida Island, in the'Solomon'group, when men from M'alaiia arrive. “Here come the headhunters!” is the dread word passed among the crowd. Five large canoes, each loaded witn fruit and manned by a crew of fierce black men, draw in to the shore. They have come from Malarta Island. 20 miles away, the island with the fiercest reputation of all as the home of cannibal raiders. A path opens like magic among the Florida mission* men. In single file, behind their chief,- the Malaita warriors walk with dignified stride up to the American soldiers operating the market. A technical sergeant from Massachusetts' steps forward. The chief hands him a paper, tattered and weatherbeaten. It is a typewritten, itemised bill for the fruit, amounting to 75 dollars.
