MINE-LAYING RAIDS
R.A.F. BOMBING PLANES SORTIES OVER FRANCE (British Official Wireless.) (11a.m.) RUGBY, July 7. The Air Ministry states: “Last night aircraft of the Bomber Command were engaged in extensive mine-laying operations. Mosquitoes piloted by Canadians on an offensive patrol attacked railway targets in France. One of bombers is missing.” In the course of offensive operations over northern France to-day, Spitfires destroyed eight enemy fighters without loss. Typhoons, one of which is missing, attacked and damaged two mine-sweepers and an armed trawler off Den Holder, and in the evening Typhoon bombers, with a tighter escort, attacked enemy shipping at Boulogne.
The Secretary of State for Air, Sir Archibald Sinclair, informed the Mouse of Commons that 276 British and 92 American bombers were lost over Germany and northern France during June.
