FURIOUS FIGHTING
CENTRAL CHINA AREAS •HEAVY ENEMY LOSSES (10 am.) CHUNGKING, April 11. In furious engagements which have been raging over 10 days in the southwest Shansi province, crack Chinese troops have recaptured a strategically important hill which had been lost in hand-to-hand fighting with several thousand Japanese, supported by planes and tanks. Another height, which the Japanese endeavoured to capture with'over 1000 troops, changed hands'i seven, times in one day. Finally, ITih Chinese flag waved over the summit. Three to 4000 Japanese were killed or wounded in this battle. The Chinese, attacking near Kingmen, in the Hupeh Province, killed ' more than 500 Japanese and took prisoners, booty, and destroyed communication lines linking the enemy strongholds of Hankow and Kingmen, states a Chinese communique. Fighting is again raging in the Kwantung Province, near Swatow, where the Japanese are attacking.
