Mrs. A. A. Whitehead is the truest of Mrs. R. Bruce, "Linn Brae,” Mangapapa. Mrs. R. Burns, who has been visiting Gisborne, returned to Auckland on Thursday. Mrs. J. It. Murphy has returned to Kotemaori after visiting iier daughter, Mrs. G. I. Parker, Rawiri street. Mrs. G. J. Winter, Fox street, is visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Grevis Winter, Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Taylor, who have been the guests of Mrs. C. H. Bull, Iranui road, returned to the Coast to-day. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Bright, Whatatutu, are spending the week-end with the former’s sister, Mrs. D. B. Barry, Wainui Beach. Mrs. Maurice Bright, Palmerston North, is arriving at Gisborne to-day, and will be the guest of Mrs. H. E. Bright, Haronga road. Sister Merle Farland is spending a few days with her mother, Mrs, Ed. H. Marriner, 286 Kahutia street, before returning overseas. Miss L. Morgan, Wellington, a former resident of Gisborne, is at present the guest of Mrs. F. E. Cave, Tukura road, and later will visit Miss E. Livingston, "Dromore,” Manutuke. ENGAGEMENTS Crone—Burns.—An engagement is announced between Lance-Corporal Geoffrey Parker, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Crone, Childers road, Gisborne, and Margaret Grace, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Burns, Palmerston North. Foster—Brcck.—An engagement is announced between John Francis Foster, Second N.Z.E.F., overseas, second son of Mrs. J. Foster, 73f> Aberdeen road, Gisborne, and Mr. F. J. Foster, late of Tolaga Bay, and Phyllis Alwin Breck, elder daughter of Mr. T. Breck, and the late Mrs. J. Breck, Gladstone road, Gisborne. McFadycn—Marsicano.—An engagement is announced between Alexander Joseph MeFadyen, R.N.Z.A.F., younger son of Mr. ;md Mrs. J. McFndyen, Gisborne, and Italia (Pat) Marsicano, W.A.A.F., younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Marsicano, Gisborne. BUSINESS WOMEN’S CLUB The initial meeting for 1943 of the Gisborne Business and Professional Women’s Club, which has been converted into a knitting circle for the duration of the war, was held in Le Grand Cafe, on Tuesday night. The chair was taken by Mrs. Hugh Jones. It was stated that the club’s activities from May to November of last year embraced the knitting of 100 articles for the armed forces. It was decided to make suitable gifts to two members who were recently married, and also to forward a parcel to Miss Barbara Walker, a club member serving as a V.A.D. overseas. BRIDGE AND MAH-JONGG TEA Bridge and mah-jongg were enjoyed at 20 tables at the delightful tea given by the members of the Poverty Bay Victoria League in the club rooms, Gladstone road, on Thursday afternoon to further the candidacy of Mioss J. Dow, the Army representative in the patriotic queen carnival campaign. Artißtic decorations enhanced the genial atmosphere of the function which was attended by Miss Dow, who took the opportunity of thanking the members for their Clouts on her behalf. A delicious buffet afternoon tea was served. QUEEN CARNIVAL FUNCTION The presence of personnel from the Royal New Zealand Navy made the “shipwreck" ball sponsored by the committee supporting the candidacy of Miss R. Dorf, the Navy representative in the patriotic queen carnival quite a naval occasion. The attendance of approximately 400, including representatives of the army and air force, gave a festive air to the City Hall, and the programme, under the supervision of Mr. Davy, went with a great swing. Mrs. W. Thomson's orchestra, appropriately costumed, supplied the music. A savoury supper was served under the direction of Mrs. Torrie, who had the assistance of a willing baud of helpers, including members of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. POVERTY BAY GARDENING CIRCLE On Thursday afternoon Mrs. L. Williams presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle, held in Le Grand Cafe. It was announced that Mr. A. R. Smith had donated to the circle, in memory of his late wife, a handsome trophy, to be known as the E.F. rose bowl, for annual competition 1 for the most points for cut flowers.

Mrs. H. Brown read an instructive paper on the work necessary in the garden during the current month. Helpful criticism in regard to decorating small bowls and the staging of cut flowers for show purposes, was given by Mrs. E. E. Jenkinson.
