A direction to Australian troops to avoid the waste of materials, money and man-power is contained in a special order issued by the Cornman-der-.in-Chief, General Sir Thomas Blarney. “Severe demands -are being made upon the financial resources- of the . nation, both by taxation and loan,’’lie i stated. “The people . providing that money are entitled to be assured that it is used with the-greatest possible economy. This involves a most careful examination of every item of expenditure and meticulous care in the : employment.- of . the available manpower. Men should not be employed on duties for which women are suitable,; . . i /• i ; “All members of the Australian military forces must be ready, if the necessity arises, to 'adopt the ■ Spartan conditions of existence which circumstances have enforced upon the' fighting soldier in the areas of actual: ■ battle. It is the special and imme-. di.ate duty of every officer, and soldier to take whatever action is- within his authority to ..prevent the wasteful divergence of the national resourses.”.
