FIRST COMMONS SEAT
NEW BRITISH PARTY AIRMAN’S SUCCESS (British Official Wireless.) (!) a.m.) RUGBY, April 9. Warrant-Ofllcer J. Loversecci (Common Wealth), with 8023 votes .won the lldeisbury by-election by a majority of 480 over'Mr. T. Peacock (LiberalRational). This.ls the first seat won by the new party. Warrant Officer Loversecci fought in the Battle of Britain. Warrant. Officer Loverseed is in his early thirties. He is the first Common Wealth Party member to win a seat. Warrant Officer Loverseed was a pilot in the Battle . of. Britain. He flew in Spain on the Republican side. His election slogan was that every vote tor him was a.vote l'or the Beveridge report. He advocated national ownership of land, coal, electricity, transport, and iron and steel industries. Formed last July, the Common Wealth Party lias contested five byclecfions. The Times, in a leading article, says Warrant Officer Loverseed is a gallant, earnest and sincere young man with a simple and direct programme. He put winning the war before all else and yet: claimed priority for a political social progress policy, with a positive appeal. The appeal won the day. Warrant Officer Loverneed’s victory is not a vote of, hostility to the Prime Minister who is completely identified with the active prosecution of the war, but rather a call which cannot safely be neglected for prompt and unequivocal measures to give effect to a great programme of social reform embodied in a series of reports to Government and Mr. Churchill’s broadcasts.
