GROWING DANGER TO ROMMEL’S ARMY EIGHTH ARMY TAKES 10,000 PRISONERS (By Telegraph—Press Association,—Copyright.) (11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 9. The Axis forces are in full and headlong retreat from the Eighth Army, reports the Algiers radio. Allied planes are inflicting heavy losses. . _ • The First Army pierced the Axis lines in the Mcdjez el l.>ah area, after which they continued to advance and mopped up several pockets of resistance which were hampering progress. The Americans pushing out from Maknassi are reported to he attacking' the German lines around Mezzo una, about 15 miles eastward of Maknassi on .the' road to Mahares. The Americans in this area are only 25 miles from the Eighth Army advancing up the coast, A link-up would endanger all the Axis forces remaining in the vast area southward and south-eastward.^ It is reported that since the break-through at the "Wadi Akarit the Eighth Army alone has captured nearly 10,000 prisoners. Large numbers have also been taken on the northern and central fronts.
