WOMAN FOR TRIAL

ILLEGAL ACT ALLEGED YOUNG GIRL INVOLVED EVIDENCE OF MOTHER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 7; A plea of not guilty was entered in the Magistrate's Court by Mary Ann Wearne, aged' Gl-, a domestic, pn a charge of unlawfully using an instrument on a 15-year-old girl with intent to procure a miscarriage. Evidence was given by a. widow that she found her two daughters, aged 1.5 years and 17 years, were pregnant; She took her 15-year-old daughter.to ■see Mr Sr Wearne and an. arrangement was made, witness paying . £.30 in 20 £1 notes and two £5 holes. Th({ two. girls were, to cost £OO and if -nothing' eventuated the money was to be refunded, She left., the young'e'i| da, lighter at Mrs. Wearyiejs and- sayt her next at home that, night, An appointment was made for the elder, girl to go later that week. , . The elder girl gave evidence that she took'a note from, her mother, tq Mrs. Wearne who gave her four pills for the younger girl. That was the only time the witness saw Mrs: Wearne. . The younger girl described what Mrs. Wearne. did to her. It was on a Monday and’ she was to return oii Thursday. She was seen at her home on Tuesday night by detectives and was admitted to hospital. Evidence was given by Detective Smeaton that, with Detective Hogan* he called at Mrs. Wearne’s house. Shy denied knowledge of the affair and said she had no money in the house. They made a search and found 20 £1 notes and two £5 and three other £3 and two £lO notes. Mrs. Wearqe was arrested and had nothing to say to the charge. The magistrate, Mr. J. L*. btout f committed the accused tor trial at. tllQ May sessions of the Supreme Court.' Bail was renewed.
