DIRECTOR'S APPEALS

GISBORNE CARPENTERS WORK ON DEFENCE JOBS SOME MEN RETAINED At yesterday’s sitting of the Gisborne Armed Forces Appeal Board. Messrs. F. R. Ball, chairman. C. E. Bickford and J. E. Benson, 10 appeals by the Director of National Service were considered.

The director appealed against the "moral service of L. C. W. Kendrew (.Grade I). manager of the Duco Motor Service. Limited. Mr. D. A. Chrisp supported the appeal.—Leave to April 30 was granted. The following carpenters who were engaged on defence work were appealed for by the director: V. G. Thompson (Grade I), builder’s labourer, reviewed: C. W. Martin iGrade I), employed by A. L. W. Martin, reviewed: J. A, A. Taylor (temp. Grade III); L. V. Compton (Grade I), reviewed; E. G. Kennedy (Grade III), employed by Glengarry. Limited: R. Green (Grade I), employed by Kirk’s. Gisborne, Limited: R. H. Henderson (Grade I). reviewed: and K. H. Harris (Grade I), reviewed, employed bv the State Housing Department. The director supported an appeal for R. A. Atkins (Grade II). employed as foreman carpenter by Kirk’s, Gisborne. Limited, and Glengarry. Limited, entered an appeal for L. V. Compton (Grade I), carpenter, employed on defence work. The appeals were supported by the Carpentry Labour Utilisation Committee, the chairman. W. Harnett, appearing for the committee. A. Kirk, R. Glengarry and V. G. Walker, district manpower officer, corroborated the evidence. —Sine die adjournments were granted for Taylor, Kennedy and Atkins, Home Guard service being ordered, while the appeals for the others were dismissed. Green not to be called before March 31. Immediate indefinite leave was recommended when Kirk’s, Gisborne, Limited, sought the release from camp of B. I. Harrison (Grade III), carpenter. Call-up Delayed A motor trimmer, J. W. Bacon (Grade I), entered a personal appeal for his exemption for a month from general service. The reservist stated that he was keen to serve, but as he was a month behind with his orders, and he was the only trimmer in Gisborne, he was asking time, to wind up his business.—The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before March .30. The manager of the Gisborne branch of Murray, Roberts and Company, Limited, L. M,iles, said in support of an' appeal by the firm against the general service of W-. McDonald (Grade ID, traveller, that the reservist was thoroughly experienced and was responsible for the distribution of rationed goods. In fact, he was practically, a key man.—A sine die adjournment was granted. An appeal against the general service of H. A.. Campbell (Grade I), farmhand, was lodged by the estate of F. B. Barker. Mr. G. I. Parker, supporting the appeal, said that the reservist was on a property of 2849 acres near Tiniroto. The stock carried totalled 4000 sheep and 600 head of cattle, while 96 bales of wool were produced last year.—A sine die adjournment was granted. Home Guard service being ordered. Release From Camp Sought

The release from camp of a farmhand, J-. H. P. Innes (Grade I), was., sought by Mrs. L. M. Times. Mr. L/CParker, who supported the appeal, said that ihc reservist’s father had died and he was needed on the : property of 1105 acres. A'. L. Innes, the appellant’s son, employed, on. the property, corroborated this. —Leave from camp to March 30 was recommended. , The board considered another appeal for the release of. a reservist from camp. The appeal was for J. Brodie (Grade I), orchardist. and was lodged by Mrs. J. Brodie, the reservist’s mother. Mr. L. C. Parker said that the orchard comprised 26 acre? at Patutahi. Last season 9000 cases of apples, 200 cases of pears, 250 cases of store fruit and 600 cases of lemons were produced. In addition, seven and a half tons of tomatoes were picked. As a minimum, five men were, required in the orchard, but at oresent there were only four. The appellant corroborated the evidence. J. Kennedy, district orchard instructor supported the appeal—lmmediate indefinite release was granted, the reservist to join the Home Guard. Two appeals were dismissed, the reservists not to be called before April 30 when' the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat and Mercantile. Company, Limited, appealed against the, general service of J. A. Mitchell (Grade I), fitter, and M. P. Collier (Grade 1), manure hand, employed at the Tokomaru Bay freezing works. The manager of the works, I. importer. said that Mitchell had come from the Public Works Department five months ago. There was no one else to take his place. It was necessary that he should be retained because of the distance the works were from any other town. If tne machines broke down, the w otks would be seriously disrupted. lne man-power officer supported the anneal. The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before April 30 The appeal for Collier, who had volunteered and had been accepted for the Royal New Zealand Air Force, was dismissed, the reservist not to be called before April 30. A personal appeal on the gioundsi <L. hardship by R. Howe (Giade HD, garage assistant, was reviewed, and a furthersine die adjournment was granted. Bakers Held Back C. Mills appealed against the general service of J. J. Weatherspn "Grade I), foreman baker, and two of his appeals, one in respect of J. Cowan (Grade II), baker, and the other for A. Williams (Grade I)., baker, were reviewed.—Sine die adjouinments were granted. Supporting an appeal against the general service of R. P. Murphy (Grade I), station manager, by the, estate of A. J. Faulkner and Mrs. E. M Faulkner, which was reviewed, Mr. L. C. Parker said that Murphy was managing two adjoining properties belonging to the estate and to Mrs. Faulkner totalling 3365 acres. The properties carried 5500 sheep and 1000 ‘head of cattle. Last seasons wool clip was 160 bales. There was only a shepherd and two old men—a ploughman and a fencer—besides Murphv employed on the property. C H. Bull, a trustee in the estate, corroborated this statement.—The appeal was held over for review at the end of March. , In support of an appeal by J. C. Smith against the general service of a farmhand, I. W. Smith (temp. Grade III), which was reviewed. Mr. D. W. lies stated that the reservist was employed on a station of 1200 acres of lnlly country at Rnkauroa. The appellant was unable to do any heavy work because of. his health.—A sms die adjournment was, granted.
