DOMESTIC SERVANTS
EMPLOYMENT LIMITED AUSTRALIAN HOMES (10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. The employment of domestic servants for more than 24 hours a week will become illegal in Australia after January 10. Before servants can toe employed for longer periods a permit must be obtained from the DirectorGeneral of Man-Power. An order to this effect was signed yesterday by the Minister of War Organisation, Mr. J. J. Dedman, who stated that the purpose of the restriction was to ensure that the limited number of domestic servants now available would be at the disposal of those most :n need of them —hospitals, institutions, mothers with young families, the aged and invalids. Gardeners, chauffeurs, charwomen, housekeepers and companions are included in the definition of domestic servants. Hotels and other residential establishments will not he affected by the new regulation.
