SCRAP METAL DRIVE
' LONDON, Sept. 21. A big new drive is opening in England to collect another million' tons of scrap metal. Factories which have stocks of three tons or more are now required to inform the Ministry of Works and Planning. A Ministry spokesman explained that it was not intended to interfere with plant or machinery likely £o be of importance for post-war purposes, and .no machinery is to be taken for scrap without the right of appeal. The country’s chief need is for heavy scrap.' In, the past 14 months 1,400,000 tons of scrap metal has been collected in voluntary salvage drives. This includes railings from about 2,000,000 homes. Nearly all the metal from blitzed buildings has now been absorbed in production.
