CARNIVAL ARRANGED

ALTERNATIVE TO SHOW OPENING OF RAILWAY Arrangements to hold a carnival on the showgrounds in place of the A. and P. Show held usually in November were entered into by the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association at a meeting of the general committee yesterday afternoon, Mr. H. W. Barker presiding. At a previous meeting, the association agreed to go into recess in regard ‘to Show operations, but yesterday’s Meeting agreed that an effort on a modified form in the nature of a carnival would be in keeping with the occasion, particularly as the opening of the Gisborne railway for passenger traffie was scheduled for about that time. No date was fixed for the carnival, it being agreed that this point might have to depend a great deal on the time for the commencement of passenr ger traffic. A. committee- was appointed to arrange a comprehensive programme, working in. certain events ff>at were usually associated with the Show, with possibly a programme of horse events in the ring, chopping, j national dancing and. dqgs, biff, leaving out the main stock, exhibits. The effort would be confined to one day. Ordinary members’ privileges would be made available to those members who had made therpselves financial under the provisions agreed to at a recent meeting. The- committee was in agreement that patriotic organisations would be granted, the facilities they had enjoyed during the past two years for the. purpose of raising funds. Arrangements were made also for the holding of a field day on the occasion of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board’s district lainb competition. The board wrote to the association hoping that the usual entries (for the competition would be arranged, this year, and the association agreed to go ahead and aljsQ, to hold, a field day on that occasion not only for lambs but also for pigs and chilled beef. A committee was asked to inquire into the matter and also on the prospects of arranging an amateur judging competition.
