U.S. AIR MARKS HOAX

REORGANISATION SEQUEL SERVICES' STATEMENTS (10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 14. The Secretary of War, Mr. H. L. Stimson announced the reorganisation of the War Department and various public relations organisations as a step to eliminating the issuance of conflicting statements by the various branches of the services. Mr. Stimson said the realignment had been decided upon before the release of a picture purporting to show ground marking, which were alleged .to have been contrived by “fifth columnists,” but which proved to be entirely unconnected with enemy plans. Mr. Stimson admitted, however, that the Mitchell Field’s air markers incident had made him happy that he had taken the realignment. Mr. Stimson was obviously aroused by the ludicrous faux pas which had been described as the “great air marker hoax,” perpetrated by an over-zealous army press agent. He said he made a personal request to General Drum to make a thorough investigation.
