A display of New Zealand and other books on the entrance lobby of the Public Library, Wellington, for the Churchill auction contains Mrs. Douglas Blair's bool; of poems and bears a card “specially autographed.” Mrs. Blair also has given other gifts to the Wellington convener. ENGAGEMENT Montgomery—Adair.—An engagement is announced between George Frederick, sou of Mrs. Montgomery and the late Mr. R. Montgomery, Aberdeen road, and Junette Anne, daughter of Mrs. Adair and the late Mr. C. Adair, Sheehan street, Gisborne. ST. JOHN’S LADIES’ GUILD Proceedings opened with a short prayer at the monthly meeting of St. John’s Anglican Ladies’ Guild, held in St. John's Church, Mangapapa, on Tuesday afternoon. The chair was taken by Mrs. A. V. Clare, and there was a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Shelton in her recent bereavement. An interesting competition was enjoyed, Mrs. F. U. Hill emerging the winner. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames A. J. Wallis and Van Slyke. SUCCESSFUL DANCE The air of gaiety pervading the Selvyu Hall oll'ered a pleasant contrast to the wintry conditions out-of-doors on Tuesday night, when the staff of the Native Department sponsored a very successful dance to raise funds for the despatch of parcels to fellow-members serving with the overseas fighting forces. The arrangements were in the hands of an efficient committee including Misses B. Ogier, S. Gray, M. Bray, and Messrs R. Connop and A. Chalmers, and so gratifying was the result of their efforts that it was decided to hold a similar function in the near future. The music was supplied by Miss L. Ruru's orchestra, and Mr. A. Chalmers contributed an extra. Supper was served informally. WOMEN’S NATIONAL RESERVE MEETS On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. W. E. Goffe presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Women’s National Reserve held in the Parish Hall, Derby street. It was decided to entertain the mothers of overseas servicemen and veterans of the 1914-18 war at a reception in the Parish Hall on Thursday, September 3. A progress report was submitted by Mrs. Hewit son in connection with the doll competition. The unhygienic manner in which, under the zoning system, bread was being taken home by children met with condemnation and the necessity for mothers to provide suitable covering for the bread was stressed. Arrangements for a “bring and buy” on Friday, September 11, .were discussed. A remit, in regard to the planting of potatoes by the*acre, thereby cutting out the small grower, was passed by the meeting and forwarded to the National Council of Women. In connection with the despatch of the. annual Christmas hamper to the Porirua Mental Hospital, it was decided to write to Wellington for instructions, as the inmates of the hospital had been evacuated on account of earthquake damage to the buildings. Several remits from the National Council of Women, read by the president, were held over for further discussion. At the close of the meeting the members adjourned to "The Burlington”- for afternoon tea.
