SAVING TRUCK TYRES

CONVEYANCE OF MEN Emphasising the need to conserve stocks of truck tyres and minimise the use of them, the No. . 3 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. V. Raines, warned operators in Christchurch that whereas they had tyres able to last six months of normal operation they would now have to see that they lasted at least 18 months. Maximum use would have to be made of the railways and motor trucks should not be used for transporting men or goods where cars or other vehicles were available. He mentioned the latter point, said Mr. Raines, as he had recently noticed a number of trucks taking men home from certain defence construction works. In this case the trucks should have been left, on the job and some other means o£ conveyance found for taking the men home.
