N.Z.E.F. SUCCESSES (N.Z.E.F. Official War Correspondent.) (10,30 a.m.) CAIRO, Aug. 10. New Zealanders were guests of the Tewfikieh Tennis Club at tennis, water polo and swimming contests on August 2, when they competed against several of the most prominent tennis players and swimmers in Egypt.
The Tewfikieh Club won the tennis, water polo and honours were even in the swimming. New Zealand’s greatest individual success was- in tennis when J. J. M'acarthy, of Hawera, defeated the Egyptian singles champion, De Walden, 2—6, 6—3, 6—4. Macarthy is a well-known player in Wellington, where he was among the first ten on the ranking list. He was a former holder of the New Zealand Universities’ singles title. Recently he won the singles at the Maadi Camp championships. The New Zealand polo team was outclassed by the Egyptians and lost by seven goals to nil. The swimming programme comprised two relays, one of which was won by the New Zealanders.
