PROGRESS MADE

AMERICAN FORCES SOLOMONS INVASION MARINES ENGAGED? (Bv Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 11. It is officially stated in Washington that some progress has been made by the American forces which have landed in the south-eastern Solomon Islands. No information is available concerning the scene of the landing. The authorities here declined to confirm the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s report that Australian commandos are participating in the Solomons action, stating that such an announcement would have to be made by the Australians. In connection with the United States Marines’ participation, a- high Marine official said it was well known that Marines, specially trained for amphibious operations, were stationed in that general area. However, so far he was unable to reveal whether or not they had participated in this specific action. These Marines have selfpropelled landing boats and also tanks and artillery.
